Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to attend all the audition camps?
No. It is not required to attend all audition camps. You should, however, attend as many as you can. The more camps you attend, the more exposure we have to your playing and marching abilities and the more we are able to see your progress over time. Attending multiple audition camps also shows us your level of dedication and seriousness in becoming a member of the ensemble.
What should I do to prepare for the audition camps?
1) Fill out the audition form; pay your ONE TIME audition fee of $60 online or $65 at the door, cash or card. Remember that you cannot participate without payment of this fee.
2) The next step will be to download your respective section(s) FREE audition packet.
3) Practice! Come to camp ready to play all exercises in the packet. As Equinox Percussion is a weekend activity, there are just not enough hours during rehearsal weekends to teach every note of the music and still be successful. We need to know that all members of the ensemble are willing to put in the time during the week to learn the music and be ready to rehearse it when camp starts.
4) There will be a visual component to the audition process. You are encouraged practice playing on the move.
5) Be confident! One of the most important things we look for in prospective members is confidence in playing, marching, and performing. You can't be confident if you are not prepared.
6) Come to audition with energy and a great attitude. Equinox is full of different great personalities that make this group special!
What if I have a job, can I still be a member?
Yes. In fact, we encourage all members, especially those members that are no longer under financial support from their parents/guardians, to have jobs. Keep in mind, however, those absences from rehearsal due to a job will not be excused. Once the season schedule is released, make sure you ask for the appropriate time off from work.
Can I be a high school student and still be a member of Equinox Percussion?
A WGI policy created in 1996 reads: "WGI discourages independent units from utilizing membership composed of any high school students who were previously enrolled in an active indoor percussion high school program and have not yet graduated." Equinox Percussion will in no way recruit students from local high school programs that have a competitive indoor percussion program. We believe that by helping the local high school programs grow that all organizations will prosper in the future. If your current high school program does NOT have an indoor percussion ensemble then you are welcome to audition for a spot with Equinox Percussion.
Participating in auditions is a great way to learn new techniques and understand what is expected as a member in an independent organization. Everyone is welcome to audition, even if you are participating in your high school's indoor program. Even if you are not ready for membership, you will gain valuable exposure to the activity, and progress your abilities in future auditions!
How much does it cost to be a member of Equinox Percussion?
There is an audition fee of $60 that can be paid via our website or $65 paid at the first audition camp you attend. . Member dues for the 2018-19 season are $1250. We encourage members to fundraise for most or all of the total cost. We will certainly help each member with this process. Many members in the past have covered 100% of their dues through fundraising! There is a payment schedule set up throughout the season for those who cannot pay in a lump sum. Dues must be paid in full by the required due date or you may be dismissed from the ensemble.
What other expenses do we have throughout the season?
Meals during camps and transportation to and from camp are not provided by Equinox Percussion. Members are responsible for covering these costs during auditions. During the season, some meals will be provided. Additionally, many members save money by carpooling and by bringing food from home to eat during meal breaks.
Can I audition for a drum corps and still be a member?
We encourage all our members to audition and march drum corps. The physical, mental and musical maturity that is learned in drum corps is a great benefit for our organization and helps Equinox progress to the next level of performance. Absences for drum corps audition camps will be excused during rehearsal weekends, but not from show weekends. We also ask that you try to make some sort of compromise with the corps you're auditioning for to be able to attend Equinox rehearsals. Even though we want you to be a part of the drum corps activity, our success depends on all members being present at all rehearsals.
Do you provide housing during camps?
Housing is not provided during the audition camps; however, once the regular season begins, housing will be provided to the members. If you’ll be driving several hours for the audition camps and need a place to stay, please reach out to email@example.com for a housing request.
Can I still teach a high school program?
It is our hope that performers from Equiniox would have an interest in teaching high school groups in the area. Often there are many opportunities. Becoming part of Equinox Percussion, you will realize all members involved make many sacrifices. One is the sacrifice of time.
Is attendance at camp mandatory?
Yes, even with teaching other groups, understand that you have made a commitment to be a performer in Equinox Percussion. School related activities that are a part of the grade for the class, and family emergencies have been excused in the past. It is your duty to manage your time efficiently and communicate Equinox’s schedule to all the necessary channels.
